Dolomutz O Dūr
Logistics
Getting to Dolomutz.
Chitral is a remote, high-altitude valley in the Hindu Kush. This page covers the practical basics of travel so you can plan with confidence — details specific to your residency dates will follow once you're accepted.
Getting there
Chitral has a small domestic airport served by flights from Islamabad and Peshawar; these are short flights on small aircraft and are frequently delayed or cancelled by weather, so build a buffer day into your plans on either end.
By road, Chitral town is reached year-round via the Lowari Tunnel from Dir, which replaced the old seasonal Lowari Pass. A more scenic but seasonal alternative runs over the Shandur Pass from Gilgit, typically open from late spring through autumn and closed by snow in winter.
Visas & permits
Most visitors to Pakistan need a visa arranged in advance, commonly through Pakistan's e-Visa system; requirements vary by nationality and do change, so confirm current rules with your nearest Pakistani diplomatic mission or the official e-Visa portal well ahead of travel. Some areas near the Afghan border in Chitral district have required additional permits for foreign travelers in the past — [TK · client to confirm current permit requirements and whether Dolomutz provides support with permits or an invitation letter].
Climate & when to visit
Spring (March – May)
Orchards across the valley come into blossom and temperatures at valley floor are mild, though higher passes can still hold snow into April.
Summer (June – August)
The most reliable travel window. Warm days, cool nights, and both the Lowari and Shandur routes open. The Shandur Polo Festival (see below) usually falls in this window.
Autumn (September – October)
Clear air and turning foliage through the orchards, with day-to-night temperature swings increasing through October.
Winter (November – February)
Cold at altitude, with snow closing the Shandur route and sometimes disrupting flights. The Lowari Tunnel keeps road access to Chitral town open year-round.
The Shandur Polo Festival
If your residency dates fall in summer, it's worth timing a trip around one of the region's signature events.
Shandur Pass, at roughly 3,700 metres between Chitral and Gilgit, holds what is often called the world's highest polo ground. Each year — usually in July, though exact dates shift and are announced closer to the season — teams from Chitral and Gilgit meet there for a free-style polo tournament that draws visitors from across the region. It's a striking, high-altitude gathering, and a genuine window into local sporting tradition for artists interested in place and community. Confirm the current year's dates before planning around it.
A few practical notes
-
Chitral sits at altitude in a mountain valley; expect cold nights even in summer, and pack layers regardless of season.
-
Mobile signal and internet can be intermittent away from the main town, especially on mountain routes and passes.
